  Valentine:Celebration of Love or Lust 


     VALENTINE, otherwise known as VAL in abbreviated form, has turned out become an annual celebration or commemoration among both youths and adults worldwide; just like Christmas. The latter is the commemoration of the birth of our Lord and Saviour (Christ Jesus); while the former is the commemoration of a lover as history portrayed him to be. He was known as Valentine; a religious fellow who defied Emperor Claudius (II) decree against conducting holy matrimony for young men and sphincters; for a selfish reason as at that time. Valentine, seeing the action of the king as being inhuman and callous, decided to go against the order at the jeopardy of his life and was secretly joining ready lovers together in holy matrimony. The king eventually got to know about Valentine's disobedience to his order and commanded him to be publicly executed. The lady that was next on his list to be joined with her lover before valentine was caught determined to immortalize his name by commemorating his execution day annually. This is what has now spread to the whole world; and which is now called valentine day or lovers day which comes up every 14th of February. 

        As interesting and commendable the commemoration of Valentine action may sound based on its historical background, yet it has gone contrary to divine recommendation and commendation because of the very many abominable things the unregenerate people have brought into it to fuel their lust and inordinate affection. Val day is now a celebration of LUST instead of it becoming a celebration of true LOVE. One of the practical pieces of evidence of Val day being a celebration of LUST is the chosen colour code for its celebration while White and Red. Knowingly or unknowingly, both the young and adults that observe Val day put on those colour combinations in various attires and fashions that very day. 

        What does this colour combination imply? It is a symbol of lost virginity. In Africa, most especially Yoruba tribes in West Africa, a white cloth is usually used to confirm the virginity of a newly wedded bride on the night of her wedding by the groom (the husband) so as to know the magnitude of respect and honour that should subsequently be ascribed to both the wife and her parents. If the white cloth gets stained with blood (red), that night, it means the husband is the first-ever in her life. If the white cloth remains white after the conjugal bliss that night, it means she had been defiled ever before the wedding day; and this brings shame and contempt upon her and her parents for the rest of her matrimonial life. 

Now, at valentine, this colour combination; White/Red is used to advertise self like this: "I am ripe enough and ready to be deflowered" or "I have been deflowered before now and I am now in need of a sin partner". What a reproach! You discover that it is on this very Val day many innocent girls fall into temptations they had been struggling against before that day, and then get dis-virgin. Val day marks the climax of illicit sexual intercourse among the youths, and a lot of matrimonial unfaithfulness among the married are registered. It is that day we see a whole lot of self nakedness on the street and in various offices on the platform of celebration of LOVE. 

         Based on these few points, therefore, Valentine day can never be reckoned with as a Christian celebration because everything about it runs contrary to God's own standard of Holiness and righteousness. The Bible says "Flee also youthful lust: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart" (2 Timothy 2:22). The beloved reader may be quick to say what if a husband celebrates it for his wife or vice versa. The love between couples should not be seasonal. It must be daily refreshed although their lives like The love Christ has for the Church as stated in Eph.5:25. It is called Agape Love.

      The original love and pity manifested by Saint Valentine, as he is popularly referred to, as at that time has gotten degenerated into moral decadence after him. What a catastrophe! 

Indeed, this is the adulterous generation of vipers the Lord Jesus spoke about. It is all evidence of the very imminence of the end. The wise should therefore get prepared. The time is at hand. Rapture can take place any moment from now. The Bible says "Escape for thy life; look not behind thee" (Genesis 19:17b). by Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, endure to the end. This is not the time to be discouraged or be thinking of looking back because of inconveniences of life (Rom.8:35-39) . The previous divine admonition says Look not behind thee. Sinner friends, if you love your soul, repent today, and be ye saved. Going to the lake of fire burning with brimstone as stated in (Rev.21:8b) is not an excursion at all. It is a journey of no return. You have the privilege of escaping going there now by accepting Christ Jesus into your life as your personal Lord and Saviour. Confess your sins; as many, as you could remember and then forsake them all (Prov.28:13). Having taken the recommended steps, quickly join a Bible-believing church where you will be prepared for an eternity of Joy. 

        Remember this: the only day worth celebrating; even with sobriety and supplications annually all through your life is the day you were transformed from being a sinner to being a saint through marvellous encounters with the Redeemer. This is what coming out of the land of Egypt by the children of Israel going to the Canaan land typifies (Exodus 12:41-42). The Canaan land which was their ultimate destination epitomizes heaven. The Lord upholds you to the end in Jesus name.


Prayer of Salvation

LORD JESUS, I believe you love me so much and that is the reason you went through pain, rejection, distress, and terrible suffering in the hands of the Roman soldiers.

The Bible says in Romans 10:9, 10 ESV

"9… if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved."

I believe with my heart the LORD JESUS as God’s only begotten Son and confess with my mouth that God has raised Him from the dead. Thank You LORD JESUS because I am saved according to the scriptures. And I receive the power of the Holy Ghost to live for Christ for the rest of my life, in Jesus' mighty name. Amen.
